Greetings of Peace dear Friends, I pray you are well. Last week's khutbah (Friday sermon) really hit me hard. You can read the text of it in the next section below. It is a long, powerful read about the choices we make as a society under the guise of "freedom, liberty, free will, and choice" - absent God - and the horrific consequences of those choices upon the individual, especially the most vulnerable in our society. It is where we have arrived today encapsulated in one man's example. In a...

Dear Friends, Greetings of Peace! I pray you are well! We had our first snow in Ohio this week, which was fabulous and wonderful! :) Thank you to everyone who send kind messages and prayers since we had to cancel last week's halaqa from illness, and everyone also seems to be catching bad bugs! Alhamdulillah, no Covid! We are all on the mend now, so looking forward to today's khutbah and tomorrow's halaqa insha'Allah! I'm going to keep it super short today... THE PROPHET'S PULPIT AROUND THE...

Dear Friends, Greetings of Peace! I pray you are well! Winter is upon us! Here in America, we have set our clocks back, which means the days feel extra short and it gets dark outside very early! Please note that to accommodate our switch to Daylight Savings Time, the khutbah today will begin at 12:45 pm ET. :) I continue to be blown away by the power of the words as we continue our work on preparing Volume II of The Prophet's Pulpit, which we are planning to release insha'Allah (God willing)...

Dear Friends, Greetings of Peace! In my introduction to the last halaqa (Surah 9: Al Tawbah, Day 5), I shared part of a "Notes to Self" journal that I created for myself back in 2006. It was amazing to have recently come upon this journal again, which appeared amidst the (never-ending!) unpacking of boxes of papers and archives from our move from California to Ohio! At the time I created the journal back in 2006, I had been a Muslim for twelve years. It sounds like a long time, but from my...

Al salamu alaykum dear Friends, I pray you are well! As we begin winding down the less than two and a half months remaining of this year, I am absolutely shocked and stunned by the swift passage of time. I thought we just started 2022, and we are already on the doorstep of 2023. I pray that we all make every day and moment count insha'Allah (God willing)! At the beginning of the last halaqa (Surah 9: Al Tawbah, Day 4) in my introduction, I addressed a misconception that I noticed was appearing...

Al salamu alaykum dear Friends, I pray you are well! In my introduction before last Saturday's halaqa, I was excited to share news of what became of our secret mission from the summer - the one week where we canceled halaqas and said we couldn't talk about what we were doing or where we were going. Alhamdulillah, with last Friday's momentous launch of Season 3 of the Ramy show on Hulu, I could finally reveal that Dr. Abou El Fadl and I actually were invited to take part in the Aftershows...

Dear Friends, Greetings of Peace! I'm not sure what happens, but we have developed a mantra here at Usuli: "It is always Thursday!" The reason is that somehow, it feels like it is always Thursday! Thursdays are what are the beginning of our Usuli intensive work - prepping this weekly email, rolling into preparation for the Friday khutbah, and then prepping for the Saturday halaqa. After the Saturday halaqa, we have barely a day of rest, if at all, and then we are launched straight away into the...

Al salamu alaykum dear Friends, I pray you are well and drawing your loved ones close and tight. I am very, very sad to report that we had to say farewell to our beloved Oso, the husky, last night. After a month-long steady decline, Oso's body finally gave out and we reached that critical point where we decided it would be more merciful to help Oso return to God than to let him suffer any longer. Alhamdulillah, his decline on the last day was clear and precipitous so God made the decision easy...
